Animal names 2018: Leo and Luna in front

Emma and Bruno instead of Mieze and Bello: The hit list shows that the names for children and animals are increasingly similar. What's behind it?

Pets are perceived as full family members. You can also tell from the choice of name.

“The last child has fur” is a common saying among veterinarians, which can also be read from the most popular names for cats and dogs. "Mieze and Bello are not in fashion," reported the pet register Tasso recently.
Once again, Luna leads the 2018 list of names among the bitches, followed by Bella and Emma. Cats were therefore named most often Lilli / Lilly, Luna and Lucy. Popular pet names can also be found in the top ten girl names.

Pets are family members

The intimate connection between Germans and their four-legged friends has only recently been scientifically investigated. According to a survey at the Small Animal Clinic of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover (Tiho), more than 90 percent consider their dog or cat to be a "full member of the family". Almost half even describe the animal as a “child substitute”.
"The original main functions of pets are no longer applicable," says Peter Kunzmann, professor of ethics in veterinary medicine at the Tiho. With cats, it is no longer about keeping rodents away. Dogs are also rarely used in private life to protect the house and yard.

Dogs are called Balu, Buddy and Charlie

The most popular names for males differ more clearly from the top ten boy names, because here Balu / Balou (the bear from the cartoon “Jungle Book”) is at the top, followed by Buddy, and Charlie / Charly. But Bruno (6th place) and Max (10th place), which are also suitable for children, appear. In the male category, Leo ousted the long-standing leader Felix.
The Tasso register records a total of 9.3 million pets. Last year 312,500 cats and 390,200 dogs were registered. The association based in Sulzbach, Hesse, is financed by donations. The focus is on the search for runaway animals and their return, says spokeswoman Laura Simon.

Anka, Muschi and Mohrle used to be cool

A look at the Tasso lists from the time before 1990 proves that their naming is subject to fashion. At that time, Susi, Lady, Anka, Trixi, Senta, Cindy, Cora, Tina, Asta and Jenny were popular with the bitches. Female cats were often called Minka, Susi, Muschi, Mausi, Mohrle, Pussy, Tiger, Lisa, Micky or Mieze.
The pet trade benefits from the fact that dogs and cats are seen as family members. Equipment and food are becoming more and more individual, as reported by the Central Association of German Zoological Companies (ZZF). For example, pet owners could put together their own food online and have their names printed on the label. Dental care snacks for dogs, baking mixes for dog biscuits and handmade collars are also popular.

Names for animals and children are getting shorter and shorter

The hobby name researcher Knud Bielefeld from Ahrensburg near Hamburg finds the alignment of animal and children's names "fascinating". It is possible that the first names for girls and boys have adapted to the animal names in recent years, he says: "Children's names are much shorter today than they used to be and they sound more and more obscure."
