Definition: what are affirmations?
In case you are wondering, what are affirmations? According to the definition, these are insurances or assurances towards oneself. Typical affirmations are:
- "I love myself the way I am."
- "I firmly believe in my goals."
- "I am convinced that I can reach you."
- "I do my best every day."
- "I alone am responsible for my life."
- "I am grateful for everything that I am and have."
- "Everything will be fine."
They could also be described as "beliefs", which are mostly used affirmatively or approvingly - as in the affirmations above. Unfortunately, negative beliefs in particular are more common in our culture. Many people tell themselves that they cannot do something, that the circumstances are to blame, or that the universe has deliberately conspired against them.
That is not helpful. Problems are not solved in this way, nor is it the truth. Conversely, positive affirmations in particular - self-affirming sentences that we say to ourselves over and over again - can immensely build up, motivate and even inspire. Granted, that sounds like esoteric frills, but it isn't. Psychological studies (PDF) prove: Our feelings, thoughts and actions are interrelated. Anyone who permanently changes their thoughts through affirmations also changes their behavior and emotions over time.
Affirmations: Louise Hay and the Beginnings
The conviction that positive thinking has a lasting effect on wellbeing is not so new. As early as the second half of the 19th century, the American naturopath and writer Phineas Parkhurst Quimby was concerned with the consequences of negative thinking.
The American non-fiction author Louise Hay is known to the general public. She too deals with the effects of positive thoughts on health and well-being in general. Her books are translated into 30 languages and deal with encouragement, self-motivation and meditation.
Beliefs: Effects of Negative Affirmations
Anyone who does some self-reflection knows which beliefs come from where. Many negative affirmations come from childhood and unfortunately have an effect to this day, even at work:
- "You are always so slow."
- "You cannot think logically."
- "You will never achieve anything."
- "You are so unstructured."
- "You are unsportsmanlike."
Sentences like these are mostly attributions by others. Often from parents, siblings, relatives. The problem with it: The more often we hear something like this, the more likely we are to believe in it and act accordingly - a self-fulfilling prophecy, so to speak. Often these people are not even aware of how toxic their statements are. Such blanket attributions burn into the brain and soul and gnaw at self-esteem.
This creates a toxic cycle
If you only look at the negative, you slow down your personality development and stay below your potential. We could learn from mistakes, improve, gain new knowledge and develop ideas. But we avoid them like this. Or they pull us down even further. In the worst case, this can lead to a cycle: Because you don't trust yourself, you do less, achieve less - and feel confirmed in the wrong assumption (that you cannot do anything). Devil!
Affirmations: How you can use them positively for yourself
So when negative affirmations demotivate, the goal is logically motivation. You don't have to be particularly spiritual to use affirmations for yourself. However, it requires a certain persistence and perseverance, because what you have internalized in several years or decades, you can hardly change in two weeks. You can use affirmations for any area that appears important or in need of change. Classic areas are: job, money, health, weight, partnership, self-confidence.
How do positive affirmations work? First of all, you basically have to be ready to make a change. Then you need focus and you need to repeat the affirmation regularly. Success also depends on your personality: some advisors recommend short, concise first-person sentences in the present. But that may not be right for everyone. Anyone who suffers from being overweight, for example, may perceive an affirmation à la “I am slim and sporty” as a mockery or unrealistic.
The trick is to find a formulation that comes as close as possible to your sensation and is still chosen positively. You can do this by phrasing the affirmation for our example like this: “Every day I get a little leaner and more athletic.” In this way, you eliminate the doubts that feed the old negative affirmations and instead express confidence.
Write affirmations in a journal!
Affirmations also work for problems that you would like to get rid of. It is important that you avoid negations such as “not” and “none” because the brain cannot process them: If someone says “Don't think about the pink rabbit”, everyone will think of a pink rabbit. The trick here is that you imagine the goal again, namely what should be thought of instead. For example, if your original thought was: “I don't want to be so reserved anymore”, then you could now formulate: “I can be more self-confident.” Or: “I can appear more self-confident.” Or: “I will be more self-confident from day to day . "
To support the effectiveness of such affirmations, you can also write them down, for example in a success diary or a lovingly designed bullet journal.
So much for the technical procedure. For example, if you're a more rational person, you may find it difficult to get into a relaxed, positive mood straight away. The setting therefore plays a role: you should choose a quiet environment in which you are completely undisturbed; You can be supported by calm music or meditation to get you in the mood.
