With 14 platinum records, the song "Old Town Road" is the most awarded single in the history of the US music industry association RIAA. The 21-year-old singer Lil Nas X announced this success on Twitter on Saturday - with a meme that is usual for him.

"Old Town Road" is the young artist's commercial debut single, which he released in December 2018 - at that time without the help of a music label. The song spread like wildfire across TikTok and didn't hit the charts until several months later.

In spring 2019, Nas X released a remix version - he was supported by country singer Billy Ray Cyrus (the father of Miley Cyrus), who was very successful in the USA. The song then broke many records: It was at the top of the American and German annual charts in 2019 and sold around 20 million times worldwide. Nas X became a star overnight and won several music prizes in the following year (queer.de reported).

"Old Town Road" has already been viewed more than 600 million times (!) On YouTube alone.

Coming out at the start of your career

Already at the beginning of his success, in summer 2019, Nas X came out as gay - initially cautiously (queer.de reported). The rapper, who grew up near Atlanta, later shared how difficult it was for him to come out. As a teenager, he tried to pray away his homosexuality (queer.de reported). He also stated that he actually didn't want to come out for fear of the fans' reaction. But then he didn't want to play this game of hide-and-seek.

Nas X told the dpa news agency last autumn: "As far as my personal development is concerned, it was probably the best year of my life. I got to know myself better and have become more self-confident."

The latest song from Lil Nas X is the more Christmassy song "Holiday", which was released in mid-November. This song made it to number 29 in the single charts in Germany. (dk)
