How many internet users are there in China?

Number of Chinese internet users reaches 854 million

The number of Internet users in China stood at 854 million at the end of June, an increase of 25.98 million from the same period last year. This comes from a report by the China Internet Network Information Center.

According to the report, the country's internet availability rate rose 1.6 percentage points to 61.1 percent. There are still more than 540 million people in China who are not connected to the Internet, mainly due to a lack of skills and education, and especially in rural areas.

The report also highlighted that mobile Internet users reached 847 million, 99.1 percent of the total Internet-using population, 29.84 million more than half a year ago.

Internet users aged 10 to 39 made up 65.1 percent of the total, with the largest age group at 24.6 percent of users between 20 and 29 years old.

The report also revealed that the percentage of Internet users aged 50 and over has increased from 12.5 percent at the end of 2018 to 13.6 percent today, demonstrating the increasing popularity of the Internet among older members of the population.

In the first half of the year, Chinese internet users spent an average of 27.9 hours per week online.

The most popular online pursuits were instant messaging services, which consumed 14.5 percent of online time, followed by videos, short videos, and music with 13.4 percent, 11.5 percent and 10.7 percent, respectively.
