New England Patriots: Wide receiver Julian Edelman suspended for four games

Julian Edelman of the New England Patriots has been banned from the NFL for four games for taking performance-enhancing drugs. Tom Brady and Co. will probably have to do without their wide receiver at the start of the season.

It is not yet known for which agent Edelman should have tested positive, but it has been reported ESPNthat the 32-year-old has already appealed the ban.

For the New England Patriots, the absence of Edelman would be a bitter loss, as the wide receiver has been the most reliable pass recipient for quarterback Tom Brady alongside tight end Rob Gronkowski for years. Should Edelman fail with his appeal, he would miss the regular season games against the Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and the Miami Dolphins.

The Patriots receiving corps is well positioned and broadly positioned, but Edelman should compensate for the departures of Danny Amendola and Brandin Cooks after his return. Last season, the Patriots star receiver missed the entire regular season after suffering a cruciate ligament tear in the preseason. The year before, he was one of the guarantors of the Super Bowl victory against the Atlanta Falcons.
