Numerous different plastic waterproofing membranes with different properties are offered: Depending on the requirements, there are bitumen-compatible, insulation-neutral, diffusible, highly chemically resistant or acid-resistant seals for a wide variety of tasks in new buildings and renovations. Their names sometimes sound like technical jargon: styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS, PYE), atactic polypropylene (APP, PYP), ethylene copolymer bitumen (ECB) or thermoplastic polyolefins / flexible polyolefins (TPO / FPO). They can be divided according to their starting materials into thermoplastic and elastomeric sealing membranes, i.e. made of synthetic rubber.

Thermoplastic sealing membranes consist of:

  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with plasticizers
  • Ethylene copolymer bitumen (ECB)
  • Polyisobutylene (PIB)
  • Polyolefin alloys (TPO / FPO)
  • Ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (VAE / EVA)
  • Chlorinated polyethylene (PEC)
Elastomer sealing membranes consist of:
  • Ethylene Propylene Diene Mixture (EPDM)
  • Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM)
  • Nitrile rubber (NBR)
  • Butyl rubber (IIR)
According to European product standards, the plastic groups suitable for use as flat roof waterproofing are listed in the application standard DIN V 20000-201. It should be noted that the safest sealing variant must be determined individually for each roof area.

Different materials are used as the carrier insert for plastic geomembranes, the most common being glass and plastic fleece or mesh. Plastic roofing membranes without a carrier insert (so-called homogeneous material) are mainly used for detailed design due to their high elasticity.


The properties of plastics include high tensile strength, high elongation at break, low stiffness, high toughness, high resistance to many aggressive substances and easy processability, all characteristics that make them suitable for use as roofing membrane.

Plastic sheets are glued or laid loosely. Compared to bitumen sheeting, it is more demanding to work with, but site handling is easier because it is lighter and only one layer with a comparatively small thickness is laid. Plastic roofing sheets are offered as rolls with widths of up to 2 m and lengths of up to 25 m, the sheet thicknesses are 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.8 mm, 2.0 mm and 2.4 mm, including extruded ones Sheets up to 3.0 mm thick are available. Every tenth more thickness increases the service life of the seal.
